When shade nets are used in orchards, the middle part usually stays fine. The problems almost always show up at the edges first.
The net is fixed there, tied to wires or frames, and left under tension for a long time. Once wind comes in, it keeps pulling on the same spots. After a while, you will see the edge starting to give way — not all at once, but slowly.
If holes are made directly on the net or ropes are tied without reinforcement, it may hold in the beginning. But after some time, those fixing points begin to stretch. The holes get wider, threads start to separate, and small damage turns into tearing.
That’s why a reinforced band is added along the edges. Instead of letting the force act on the net itself, the load is taken by the band. In actual use, this makes a clear difference — the edge holds its shape much better, even after being under tension for a long time.
For fixing, grommets are used rather than tying directly onto the fabric. This keeps the fixing points more controlled. One detail that helps a lot is adding a washer under the grommet. Without it, the force sits right on the edge of the hole. With a washer, the pressure is spread out, so the area doesn’t wear out as quickly.
Material also matters here. In outdoor orchard conditions, cheap metal grommets tend to rust or deform over time. Brass ones hold up better — they stay in shape and don’t corrode easily, which is important when the net is not removed frequently.
In the end, it’s not just about how strong the fabric is. What really affects how long the net lasts is how the edges and fixing points are built.
